St John Fisher: Our vision

At St John Fisher, we strive to create a school community where children and adults achieve their full potential and SHINE!  We will achieve this through engagement, high expectations and by treating all with respect and dignity.

Some comments from our most recent Ofsted Report (June 2021):

The school’s mission and vision are a golden thread running through hall aspects of school life. Leaders encourage pupils to live out the school’s Catholic values in their words and deeds. Pupils said that this makes the school a happy, friendly and caring place to be.

Pupils are quick to celebrate each other’s strengths and achievements. They are quick to praise their peers where it is due. They are considerate towards others when they are struggling and are keen to offer support.

Pupils get on well together and any rare fallings out are often resolved by the pupils themselves. Pupils are confident that when they ask their teachers for help, including with bullying, issues will be resolved fairly and sensitively. Teachers, parents and carers agree that pupils are well cared for.

Pupils progress well across the different national curriculum subjects. They enjoy learning new things and behave well in lessons. Pupils take pride in their work and pay heed to their teachers’ advice. This helps them to improve their work.

Parent View We encourage our parents and carers to fill in the questionnaire to let Ofsted know your views about your child’s school.

Launching Parent View, Baroness Sally Morgan, Ofsted Chair said:

‘Parents know how valuable the insight of other mums and dads can be when making choices about schools. Parent View will provide a comprehensive national platform for gathering this information. Parent View will also give parents and carers in England the opportunity to make their voice heard when it comes to the performance of their child’s school. What parents tell us through these questionnaires will be considered when making decisions about when a school should be inspected’

You will be asked 12 questions and your answers will be anonymous. If you would like to complete the survey in school, we can make computers available on Parent’s Evenings with guest accounts.

Below is a table showing our most recent questionnaire results based on 60 responses.

What we are doing well: Our response and actions:
  • I am really pleased with my child’s progress at this school.
  • A fabulous school filled with truly caring staff, teachers and support/ admin.  My son has developed and grown in a great place with values embedded.  Forever grateful
  • I always recommend this school.  My son has come on a lot since starting.  I was nervous at first as he only turned 4 a month before school but his teacher has really helped him to come on.
  • We love everything about our school from the minute we come in and are greeted by the gate.  From the first day, we have always looked forward to coming to school. ‘Best School Ever!’
  • I can’t praise the school enough. I can see what a marvellous school St John Fisher is and how each child is truly valued and cared for.  Teaching and leadership staff are amazing.  Keep up the good work.
  • My child is happy and enjoys school.  He is listened to by his teachers and feels safe.
  • My child is given opportunities to flourish at St John Fisher, he is happy and feels valued.

We aim to continue to support all of our children and families so that they are able to grow, learn and flourish at St John Fisher.

We really appreciate the comments made; they help us to celebrate what we are doing well and focus on some areas that we can improve even more.

What we could do better: Our response and actions:
  • Regarding homework, I think they receive a lot. We try our best to complete as much as possible.  I think receiving all of the homework that is set has helped my son’s progress
  • I do think school dinners could be more healthy, especially the puddings
  • Sometimes the doors aren’t open at 8.45am and sometimes it is nearly 3.10pm when they come out

During the Summer term, we will be looking at homework across all years.  We will be asking both families and children for their thoughts about how useful it is and how it could be improved to help aid progress in school

Knowsley authority advise that school meals are:  Nutritionally balanced to ensure they are low in fat, sugar and salt and high in vitamins and minerals

The school day begins at 8.55am and doors open at 8.45am to help ease congestion at this busy time.  Staff always aim to ensure that doors are open on time at both start and end of the day.  We will continue to monitor this in the Summer term.

What we are doing well: Our response and actions:
  • We have found the school helpful and understanding regarding our child. We have particularly found the courses for parents helpful.
  • Really pleased with my child’s progress

School will continue to respond to your concerns as promptly and professionally and aim to ensure your child is always happy and safe in school.

All staff will continue to have the highest expectations for your child and will provide support and challenge to enable them to reach their goals and potential.

We will continue to explore ways we can further improve communication and ways to use the app for other school events similar to booking for Parent’s Evening

We will provide Healthy Tuck Shop daily and provide a variety of choices, especially more variety of fruit as the season allows. Health Champions will create some posters to advertise the Tuck Shop around school.

What we could do better: Our response and actions:
  • At present…school activities appear to be aimed primarily at parents who do not work or not working full time.
  • More notice for events would make it easier and possible (for parents) to support.
  • Having children stand in a queue at break-time appears to be an unhealthy option to running around
  • My child has become obsessed with checking labels and content in food which I feel is unnecessary and inappropriate
  • The friendly and approachable nature of the school has changed…There seems to be more disruptive behaviour in school…the standard of work and homework seems to have decreased

We will continue to update the school diary on the newsletter and app as far in advance of events as possible.

We will run some of our parent events at a later time to enable working parents to attend.

We will ensure we promote moderation in healthy choices to children via our Health Champions, website and assemblies

Leaders will monitor teaching and learning throughout the school to ensure the standard is high.

Leaders and staff will continue to be available and approachable to all parents and carers, especially at the start and end of the school day.
