‘The Incredible Book Eating Boy’ by Oliver Jeffers
After reading ‘The Incredible Book Eating Boy’ by Oliver Jeffers and learning about the digestive system in our Science lessons, Year 4 used a range of materials to make a junk model of the digestive system. We spent time researching junk model artists, Leo Sewell and Michelle Reader, and discovered the techniques and materials they use in their work.
Daily Mile at SJF
At St John Fisher, each class takes part in a mile run at least twice a week. We use our playground and field to do complete our runs and always have fun doing it! It has helped to develop our fitness and stamina as well as helping us to concentrate and be more alert in our lessons.
Moving and Handling in EYFS
In our early years outdoor provision, we have daily access to a challenging environment that allows us to develop our physical skills developing vital skills such as; jumping, climbing, running, balancing and many more. We enjoy using the equipment to create our own challenges and move confidently in a range of ways, safely negotiating space and developing our problem solving skills.
Y4 – Ancient Egypt
As part of our Egyptian work in history, Year 4 have mummified tomatoes. Yes you read correctly!
Just like the Egyptians did with most of the internal organs and fluids from the body, we began by scooping out the inside of the tomatoes. The Egyptians knew that the drier they could get the body, the less likely it was to rot. We then cleaned our tomatoes using anti-bacterial gel. This replicated the how the Egyptians would cleanse the body with Palm Wine and water from the River Nile.
We made our own version of Natron using salt and bicarbonate of soda and placed this inside of the tomatoes. The Egyptians did this to make sure the body was as dried out as it could be.
Over the next few weeks, we will be observing how the mummified tomatoes change and comparing this with the tomato we did not mummify.
